DIY Gifts
Logically, I suppose I should have posted this bunch of suggestions first, since they're all things that require some amount of effort on the giver's part.
First, and most awesome, is this binary scarf. Get your knit on with the handy instructions provided.
This is sort of a silly one, but kinda cute nonetheless. I guess these faux-fur stoles with claws are for sale, but I don't even know what language that is on the site. (Japanese?) But whatever. I don't like the patches, anyway. So here's what you do: Buy a shaggy/furry scarf and some felt. Cut the felt into long, pointy talons. Stitch. Now you have the perfect scarf for any riot grrl worth her sugar, spice, and everything sharp.
Still more outerwear...I love the idea of these L and R mittens, but I don't really like the execution. They don't look terribly comfy, the colors are pretty blah, and they're expensive to boot. Hence my suggestion: Make your own. These are the easiest DIY project yet. Buy felt or letter patches and a pair of mittens. Again, stitch. (Do make sure you get the correct letter on each hand, though, or you will wind up with one confused recipient.) If you're completely inept, you could even get iron-on L and R patches, but I really wouldn't suggest it. They usually don't stick all that well and mittens are generally subjected to a lot of wear and tear. These would be an adorable present for a kid (or anyone who still has trouble telling left from right—there are many of us, I assure you).
And, just in case you haven't already seen it, check out the Make Open Source Gift Guide for more (less craft-oriented) suggestions.
