In Praise of Portlandia
If you have a bit of time, you should really watch Portlandia. It's a sketch comedy show created by and starring former Sleater-Kinney guitarist/singer (and current frontwoman of Wild Flag) Carrie Brownstein and SNL actor Fred Armisen. It sends up Portland's hipster culture to hilarious effect. (Full disclosure: I've never been to Portland, but I gather it's like Williamsburg but more so, in which case the show seems bang-on to me.)
Anyway, my point isn't purely to get you to watch the last season of a show but to let you know that it's coming back for a second season. Yay! One season wasn't enough. For a more in-depth look at the show and Brownstein herself, check out this New Yorker piece. It's predictably poncey (seriously, you're going to stick with a style guide so old you write "Web site" as two words, one capped?), but quite interesting nonetheless.
Side note: If you haven't done so yet, get a copy of Wild Flag's self-titled debut album. You will never again get the song "Romance" out of your head. That's not a bad thing. Here, I'm embedding it for you:
