Star Trek: The New (Old) Generation

Okay, I know it's dorky, but I'm still excited about the upcoming Star Trek movie. I was thrilled that they cast the adorable Antonin Yelchin as Chekov (let's hope there are no lines about "nuclear wessels"), and now they've apparently cast John Cho (Harold from Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) as Sulu and Scotty, respectively.
I can see Simon Pegg being a completely awesome Scotty. 'E's workin' as fast as 'e can, Captain. 'E's only human.

Hot and Dead

No, this is not a post about necrophilia. Just two movie recommendations. I saw Hot Fuzz over the weekend and can heartily recommend it. It's written/directed by Edgar Wright and stars much of the cast of Shaun of the Dead, which, I must say, is only the second zombie movie that didn't scare the shit out of me. (The original Night of the Living Dead was the first, but it certainly didn't make me laugh the way Shaun of the Dead did. Obviously.)

So yeah. Very, very funny. And Simon Pegg is surprisingly attractive minus a few pounds, some facial hair, and much of Shaun's schlubbiness.

E.T. FTW!

Me: hey, have you ever seen E.T.?
Afshin: yeah
Afshin: i can't remember much of it
Afshin: but i remember thinking i didn't really see the appeal
Afshin: the alien was dumb. the kid was an asshole
Afshin: the government was stupid
Me: you're a jerk.
Afshin: nazi.
Afshin: don't tell me when i have to feel "magic"
Afshin: and don't tell me that fucking roadkill "alien" was "cute"
Me: hey, i was E.T. for Halloween one year.
Me: i was adorable.
Me: my heart lit up, too.
Me: it was precious.

Get Smart (Anew)

Get Smart was one of my favorite shows ever. Deeply silly, I know, but I just thought it was awesome. (Of course, I was watching it on Nick at Nite when I was about 10, but whatever. It still rocks.) So it is with a mixture of excitement and trepidation that I have learned that Warner Bros. is making a new movie based on the series. It will star Steve Carell as Maxwell Smart (solid choice), Alan Arkin as the Chief (also excellent), and Anne Hathaway as Agent 99 (eh). I really hope it's cheesy and insouciant and trippy like the show and not another Bewitched fiasco.
